It's a beautiful day....

It's the beginning of March and Spring feels like its in the air...even if it is only for a short time, more rain forecast this week...but no matter, today makes it all worth while!

Hope you've all been keeping well and busy (can't believe my last post was also about Spring...last year's!)

I've been kinda sat on a plateau for the last year, not really moving mentally, physically I started swimming (after 18 years of not dipping a toe in the water), thinking the exercise would help shift some weight and tone up the body...I started with 20 lengths of the pool in an hour twice a week, gradually pushing myself to increase the lengths...I achieved 60 lengths in an hour 3 times a week and felt very pleased with myself. My doctor was quite impressed with me too! I felt physically better, along with changing eating habits I thought I may have cracked getting healthier ....it didn't last very long as this time last year I had to stop swimming due to hip pain, I was diagnosed with Bursitus (a fluid filled sack surrounding muscle/bone which become inflamed due to repetitive movement...it's quite common in athletes), firstly in one hip and then over a few weeks in the other.  I couldn't take anti-inflammatory medication as I had a suspected stomach ulcer...the only thing was to stop the exercise and pop pain killers to help with the pain...it didn't help, so on the advice of the doctor I had a steroid injection straight into the Bursa, which should have relieved the pressure and got me back to "normal", sadly it didn't, it made it worse!  Bursitus usually, with rest and anti-inflammatory meds, dissipates within a few weeks....I am coming up to a year on from my diagnoses and the pain is worse than ever, restricting my movement considerably, I have pain when I sit, sleep, stand, walk, some days it's worse than others...on those days I could cry with the pain. One suggestion (on the web) is to aid my mobility with a walking stick...I haven't gone that far, yet! I've heard all kinds of jokes from my teens about using a stick at my age...haha!  So now the doctor has referred me to see a physio, my first appointment was before Christmas, which I had to walk to as the car had broken down, the walk knocked me out for days.  I have held off on making the second appointment until I have four wheels again. Looking forward to the day when I am pain free and back in the pool, even if it is at a slower pace...I really miss the swimming!

At the beginning of 2013 I taught myself how to crochet via YouTube.  It all started when a friend of mum's couldn't complete a scarf she was making for mum, so while they were away that weekend (Nov 2012) I finished it, and somehow managed to get the "knitting" bug....by the end December 2012 I had knitted 72 scarves for her friends and family! It hasn't quite stopped, albeit at a more sedentary pace, I liked the idea of Crochet but had never, ever, attempted it.  So off to YouTube I went and clicked away until I found a decent, easy to follow tutorial on different Crochet stitches and I was away...more scarves, baby blankets, lap blankets, bobble hats, cowls...the reason I like it so much is it gives my brain chance to calm down...to not feel like it's containing spaghetti junction, or headless chickens, it actually feels like, for those moments I am stitching, that the routes/pathways, whatever you want to call them, are unfurling from their tangle and setting down clear pathways from A to B, and for a split second in life I feel kinda like the old me, with a grip on something. I'm still in my little disconnected world but somehow it's calmer and feels manageable. Its sad when I stop stitching that my mind springs back into a heap of chaos and the grip on reality is gone.

The other constant in my life (besides family) is Instagram...due to the depression and all that it brings with it, almost everything I post is from within my four walls or garden, it's another tool that helps me with my daily trials.  I LOVE seeing what others post and how it relates to them and their lives, the virtual community that has built up around me and my followers/those I follow is amazing!  I've also noticed it's a great help to those who are in need, mentally/physically, to sound off and receive great support back in an instant...I truly believe it can be a life saver for some.

The weather has been fabulous today, it's quite uplifting to see the sun shine for a long period in a day after having so much grey skies and rain...this has been a really bad Winter for floods and destructive winds, so seeing things in bud in the garden is really quite exciting...

I'm gonna sign off now, as my brain hurts! Too much concentration on what I want to say, gotta push myself to do it (apologies for any spelling mistakes...another brain issue!).

Let me know what you've been up to over the last year...I'm sure some of you have some exciting news to share that I've missed :o)

May Day....

and I think Spring has sprung, finally!!

it's still on the chilly side but this week's forecast is sunshine all the way...can't wait to see more things burst into life :o)

This is also the time of year that the gorgeous blooms of the Magnolia trees show themselves, they are SOOOO gorgeous and have always been irked at not being able to have one in our small garden, but, last night, while diving into Asda after football to pick up a pizza for a quick tea, I spotted lots of plants for sale {as is usual this time of year}, and surprisingly a whole range of Magnolias! One, aptly named "Susan" is suitable for "small gardens and even patio pots"....can you guess what happened next? yes, ***happy dance***, a ride in the trolley to checkout {the plant, not me!} and a swift journey home to our small back garden.

At this moment in time it is basking in the glorious sunshine of the day, waiting to be ensconsed in it's new home...I'm thinking the large pot I have in the garden will be just the place for it, that way I can move it around the garden as I see fit...I know it won't be as spectacular as the gorgeous big trees but it will be my little "bonsai" Magnolia :oD

And finally, a request to all you gardeners out there, can any of you tell me what this tree is called, it's in a neighbour's garden but was planted before the current neighbours moved in...any ideas??

Hope you are having some super sunshine where you are and that Spring truly feels like it's here {unless, of course, you are heading for Autumn or Winter!}

The beginning...

...of a "new" Ice Age...

Snow has become a novelty in Britain during Winter over the last 20/30 years...the norm seems to have become wet winters, cold winters and on the odd occasion, mild winters; but for the last three years we have had snow in Winter, across the WHOLE country...I'm not just talking a light dusting either, it's "country grinding to a halt" kinda snowfall {mind you, that's not actually hard to achieve as this country, whilst proud of  "pulling together", seems to grind to a halt very easily!}

For our part of the country in particular, we have had a Red weather warning for snow...not a usual occurance...the last was in 2010 when this happened

Source: Met Office 2010

A "white-out" across the country...the first time the whole country has been covered in snow at the same time. Before that, well, I can't recall ever hearing a Red weather warning....Is this the beginning of the "new" Ice Age??

It arrived early hours on Friday, whilst some areas of South Wales have had it quite bad, we had it heavy, but thankfully not too disruptive...by late afternoon it was possible to clear the snow off the car, gingerly escape from the street and drive on the main roads, with caution. So we took the opportunity to get some groceries {yes, I know..."closing the door after the horse has bolted"}, pop into the wool shop...well, snow's not gonna stop a girl from keeping hold of her creative mojo, right??

Super Chunky = Super Gorgeous-ness!

I also got to carry out a  "Random Act of Kindness"  for a homeless chap, before heading back home ahead of the temperatures dropping & ice forming.

Today, we had to pop out to collect our youngest from the other side of the City, he had a snow day yesterday with his mates and ended up sleeping at a friends...was a better plan than trying to collect him last night.  The bonus in all of this I got to stop the car and take a few snow pictures on the way home...the downside, I failed to take my  "proper" camera with me, so had to rely on the iPhone, but am still a happy bunny!

Here's just a few...

and finally my favourite feathery few...

Hope you're having a fab weekend....snowy or otherwise!

Our gratitude goes out to each and everyone of the Armed Forces serving our country, God Bless those who sacrificed their lives to keep us free, to enable us to achieve our dreams and ambitions, our thanks are also offered to the families of those who lost a loved one

Well....

I AM still here, I've ALWAYS been here...just not in a very "talkative" frame of mind

I've been passing by your blogs and reading all your lovely "snippets of life" and it has kept me ticking along slowly...thank you!

I've wanted to share lots of things with you over the summer but it hasn't come off, the will to do things is quite hard right now...Facebook and Instagram have been the best I could manage.  It's very frustrating, but it is what it is and I have to ride the wave as best I can...

One of the things I seem to have grown more of a liking for over the last nine months is photography...well, by photography, I actually mean taking pictures...all the complicated stuff about apertures and shutter speeds etc is slightly going over my head...I like to"do" rather than "digest", if the shot comes off, great!  If not, I have no idea why...

I upgraded my pocket Samsung point and shoot to a Panasonic Lumix FZ48 {Bridge camera}. I LOVE the quality of shots I get with it...it makes me see everyday life as a photo opportunity now, I just need to get past feeling SO self-conscious when holding the camera.

I'm in love with Macro photography and LOVE taking photos of flowers in the garden..I have just learnt that I can actually purchase a Converter lens for the Lumix, which will give me the "in-close" shots I truly long for..I actually did a *happy dance* when I read about it here

Here are some {edited/non-edited} shots taken this weekend at the Cardiff Harbour Festival using my new toy:

and to leave you with a little bit of awesomeness, this is what I saw when looking up whilst hanging out the washing at 7am this morning

captured on a digital zoom so it's a bit grainy.

To see my flower shots pop on over to my Flickr photstream

You can purchase my shots, pop along to my Instaprints page

Hope you're having a great week...with the kids back in school this week I suspect some of you are breathing in the silence!!
