Movie Magic!

Danny Kaye
{born: 1913 ~ died 1987}

Danny Kaye was one of my all time favourite comedians, as a little girl and growing teenager there was nothing more I loved than curling up on the sofa, duvet enveloping me watching one of Danny's films.

His jovial quick wittedness, timing and uber-fast talking during some sequences left me with a cheshire cat grin throughout his movies.

{White Christmas: with Bing Crosby}

Danny was the kind of person I thought would be fab to have as a grandad ~ surely he would keep me entertained ~ at all times ~ he would be there if I needed to talk but most importantly when imparting his super-cool advice he would spontaneously burst into song *sigh*
SO cool....  :o)

I'll leave you with {and there are SO many to choose from} one of my favourite moments from one of his films

White Chritsmas {1954}

I love how the improvised slapping of the fan on Bing's chest, at the end of the number, has them both cracking up.....

He truly was one of the great actors :o)

Twenty Question Tuesday

In your eyes, what’s Paradise?
For me, an afternoon spent lying in a field with my husband next to me with a summer breeze blowing over us whilst wild flowers scent the air, a picnic packed with a bottle of wine too, looking at a huge blue sky with white fluffy clouds floating by, daydreaming & not having a care in the world.

Prized Possession
Ouch this is a toughie, can I say my husband or does that not count?

Favourite medium to work with and why?
I have done so much crafting over the last 12 years & made pretty gemstone jewellery for many years which I loved but over the last few years my favourite crafts have been when I am painting things, like chalkboards, letters & signs.

Flowers or chocolate?
Can I be greedy and have both? I do love yellow flowers though ~ yellow roses & yellow tulips are my favourite.

Who influenced you the most?
I think in my love of vintage style & vintage home-making my Nana influenced me the most & I spent a lot of my childhood being with her but in my general life it is my husband, ever since I met him he has been a wonderful creative influence & also gives me so much confidence to try things, dreams are never too big to dream & he is constantly encouraging & supportive in anything I do.

Who would you most like to go to Dinner with?
Oooh another toughie, mmmmm I think I will have to say the rather delicious Julian McMahon ~ but don’t tell my husband!

Top Cat or Banana Splits?
Banana Splits, ooohh I used to love this show!

Today I wore:
A pair of skinny jeans with a huge roll up, a pale blue vintage style flowery dress over the top with a little aqua vest top underneath that & a pretty thin jade puffy sleeve cardigan over the top.

RomCom or Horror flick, explain your choice
Mmmm depends on the mood I’m in, I must admit I’m not a great lover of Romcoms in general & don’t like the really horrid gruesome horrors but I do love a good thriller/edge of your seat horror.

What inspired you to do what you do?
I am so in love with pretty homes & when we moved into the house we are in now which is an old Victorian with pretty open fireplaces, sash windows & beautiful cornice I wanted to decorate it in a pretty soft vintage style & my love of homewares & accessories completely took over my life. I made some things, I upcycled others & love it so much I decided to start selling homewares that I had painted/upcycled into shabby vintage style lovelies alongside handcrafted hearts & garlands which I sold at craft fairs, on Ebay & my own website, then it just grew & grew from there!

McDreamy or McSteamy?
Mmmmm I don’t actually watch Greys Anatomy anymore but I would have to say McSteamy, now if you were to ask me to choose between the lovely Supernatural boys that would be a really hard one to answer! *giggle*

If you could do anything else, what would it be?
I think I would love to be a photographer, I really do love taking photos. I also studied performing arts when I was at college & University & although I don’t think I would like to go back to acting I did love doing set design & costume design & so if I had the confidence I think I would love to do one of these jobs too.

Favourite item of clothing
Oh I don’t think I have one, do PJ’s count? I am quite obsessed about pretty, comfy PJ’s! If shoes count I have a really pretty baby pink pair with a frill on the front from the strap downwards & they always make me feel so pretty & feminine when I wear them.

Best childhood memory
Spending time with my bestest friend in all the world! We were inseparable, the only day we didn’t see each other was Christmas Day when we had to spend it with our families! Pah!

Our parents were friends & she used to sleep over at my house every Friday & I used to sleep at her house on a Saturday ~ those years together were so wonderful.

Most cringe-worthy moment
Oh this was just horrendous for me! It was in the 90’s & I had just bought a wonderful thin fabric ankle length black coat (see I told you it was the 90’s & I was such a Goth!) & I was travelling down an escalator in a shopping centre & just as I was reaching the bottom my coat got caught in the side & was pulled into the escalator!!!

The whole thing stopped & I had to tell the people behind me to try & find someone for me to help me! Oh it was so embarrassing as I was by myself & I had to stand there whilst everyone who had got on behind me & everyone who came afterwards had to walk past me to get off as I was stood holding my coat with the bottom of it sucked into the escalator! Someone who worked in the shopping centre did finally come (after what felt like about 7 years) & after a while managed to pull it out but the coat was ruined & I was feeling pretty rotten myself!

Favourite holiday destination
I’m not sure I have a favourite holiday destination; I do love holidays in general! Over the last few years I’ve really, really enjoyed visiting a friend of ours that worked in Hamburg, he is a doctor of particle physics & worked in an amazing place that we even got to visit. He now works at Cern in Geneva (familiar to those who have read the Dan Brown book based there) but lives just over the border in France so I’m sure we will be visiting him there very soon! I think holiday’s with family & friends can be the most amazingly fun holidays full of fantastic memories.

Which celebrity would you have as your best friend and why
I think this would have to be Drew Barrymore, she seems so genuine & sweet & really down to earth too. We are the same age & I think we would have so much girly fun & giggles together.

Best “crafty” tip you can offer
Try as many different crafts as you can!

What’s your Star sign?
Scorpio.

What would you most like to see happen next?
I think in terms of Vintage Amethyst & my husband too we need to find commercial property to work from & move the businesses out of our home! James is an artist & we both work from home which of course is lovely but the two businesses are taking over our home & our life in general which can be quite stressful at time.

We both need that space between work & home life so that it perhaps would help us relax more, it is far too easy to do ‘one more thing’ before finishing & then you realise when you do finish & start to make dinner it’s 9pm! We both have said that we need to work together though, as I think it can get quite lonely too working alone so trying to find somewhere that can accommodate Vintage Amethyst & an artist is proving to be quite difficult!!!

I would also really love to open a pretty shop too & I’m always imagining decorating it all & how things would be displayed, but seeing how busy the Vintage Amethyst online boutique keeps me I’m not sure that is going to happen for a while yet ...

Vintage Amethyst is the gorgeous contributor to Twenty Question Tuesday this week....her blog is not something you want to miss out on, she has the most beautiful, dreamy and "must-have" items for sale.....thanks Alison! ;o)

Movie Magic!

Sandra Bullock

Sandra won her first Oscar for the character she played in The Blind Side....most of Sandra's films are romantic comedies but in this she portrayed a woman ~ Leigh Anne Tuohy {who I must say is not one to be messed with} and offers, through a random act of kindness, a teenager ~ Michael Oher ~ a place to stay for the night.  Michael, who has not had the best start in life stays and ultimately becomes part of their lives.

Leigh Anne {Sandra Bullock} and her husband legally make Michael part of their family and help him achieve his grades in school which eventually lead to Michael being offered a football scholarship.

{the real Michael Oher}

Michael is now playing in the NFL!!

I love this film for many reasons ~ it's a feel-good film, it's a true story, it has a happy ending but best of all I love the "no-nonsense, don't mess with me attitude" Sandra portrays Leigh Anne as having....wish I had some of that authority!!!

Go see it, rent it or buy it...you won't be disappointed!

Oh! and CONGRATS to Sandra for winning the Oscar, she SO deserved it for this portrayal, I only wish she hadn't been cynical at receiving it!

Twenty Question Tuesday

Flori
{creator: Darcy Wilkinson}
In your eyes, what’s Paradise?
A good night's sleep, I have always slept poorly and in recent years it has become much worse. I long for an 8 hour deep, refreshing sleep. Unobtainable I guess, without really strong drugs lol, but then I suppose Paradise is just a pipedream for most people.

Prized Possession
Hmm, the sappy answer would be my health and my family, due to ill health I do appreciate them so much more. But I am a material girl at heart so I think it will have to be my craft room, in its entirety! I have had to share rooms all my life, never had a space to call my own till now and I love it! If I had to pick one thing alone it would have to be my iPod, I cannot live without music....hmmm but then there is Facebook, so I do need my laptop, oh and my phone, and promarkers, and journals... Do you see my dilemma? *stands up* My name is Darcy, I have issues with choosing!

Favourite medium to work with and why?
It's been a long time since I was able to get into anything medium...oh right, not that kind of medium...well it changes often, but right now I am loving my promarkers.

Flowers or chocolate?
I am not keen on cut flowers, for a start they die, which makes me sad, secondly many come from abroad and involve a huge carbon footprint and thirdly if they have a strong perfume they give me a migraine...as does chocolate, but hey sometimes you just have to suffer, no? If I were to choose one to receive, on a virtuous day I would say flowers, but in a plantable, native form for the garden. On a normal day I would say a big bar of Galaxy, thank you very much.

Who influenced you the most?
My Grandmother, she brought me up and taught me life skills and decent values. She also tried to get me to eat tripe, but I forgive her.

Who would you most like to go to Dinner with?
Stephen Fry, though I wouldn't dare speak for fear of sounding terribly "stoopid" compared to him.

Top Cat or Banana Splits?
I don't remember ever watching Banana Splits, but I did love Top Cat, though my fave cartoon was Duckula.

Today I wore:
Pjs and a smile.

RomCom or Horror flick, explain your choice
Neither, I prefer sci-fi/fantasy or action/thriller. My fave films are The Usual Suspects and Labyrinth.

What inspired you to do what you do?
What do I do? I am not sure what that is. I do a bit of everything, Jack of all trades, master of none! I am inspired by everybody, I want to do what they do, and that changes with every person I meet, lol! Nobody in my family creates...not one of them, my Grandmother did some knitting, but not a lot. My mother writes a little and can play piano, but that is it. So I have no idea where my love of creating comes from. I blame t'interwebs!

McDreamy or McSteamy?
McDreamy, I know who they both are but I don't watch it.

If you could do anything else, what would it be?
I am pretty sure I would be really good at being an heiress to a billion dollar fortune! I know you are nodding in agreement Sue!

Okay, I would like to be musical, nothing stopping me I suppose...well apart from the lack of billionaire-ness, there is a keyboard in the attic...I could learn.

If you want a serious answer...you weren't really expecting any of those were you? Oh! ok, you were...hmmm well I wasn't great at Science at school, but I am fascinated by Forensics. Truly I would love to be good at Science and work in the field of Forensic Investigation.

Favourite item of clothing
Shoooooooooooooes! nuff said!

Best childhood memory
My childhood wasn't great, I have blanked out entire chunks of it. I have no more than half a dozen photos and a few stuffed toys, no other memorabilia...and hence no memories. But for one. I must have been 3-4 years old, I was in the flat of a family friend, a grandfather type figure. He would put on Flamenco music (on a proper old fashioned record player) for me to dance to while I ate pickled onions. I think this explains a lot...

Most cringe-worthy moment
Yesterday...in the local shop I was buying a bottle of wine to take to a bar-b-que. I was asked my age, and for ID. Given that I am 40 I was stunned, then the assistant exclaimed really loudly 'oh you are never 40' and 2 other shopworkers and a customer came over to look at me. I was totally red faced and after I finally paid I pretty much ran out of the shop.

Favourite holiday destination
Germany: Because I went there when I was 15 and fell in love with a cute boy...fickle like that. Norway: Because it was so beautiful, and when I went they had MTV which mesmerised me, (was a long time ago and we didn't have it here in the UK) I've been to a few places, but given the choice I would always go to Scotland. I am not from there and have no family connections there, but it always feels like going home when I am there. I cannot explain it.

Which celebrity would you have as your best friend and why
Simon Cowell. He is my guilty pleasure, I do love him a lot, but I would never actually want to have a celebrity boyfriend, so best friend would be the next best thing.

Best “crafty” tip you can offer
There is no 'wrong'...however learn about colour, you will be glad you did.

What’s your Star sign?
Aquarius...ahhh I get it now, my crafty gene is not family related, I got it from The Universe. Apparently us Aqua types are all creative, I know lots...see my lubbly friend Kirsty in a previous post...go on scroll down, you know you want to!

What would you most like to see happen next?
I'd like you to scroll back...oh you are back, great! I would like my son to get a good and permanent job within the field he has studied the past 4 years, in which he will soon have 2 degrees and a huge financial debt! That would give me so much piece of mind. For myself...oh the usual, lose weight, get fit, get my house in order....generally just get more stuff finished. I am great at starting projects, finishing...not so good, unless it is cakey bakey-ness, I can finish those no problem!

Oh P.S...am I allowed a P.S? too late, I've started, so I'll finish....I have started *groan* to learn Romanian, I really would like to see me able to have a proper conversation in Romanian with my Transylvanian friends.

P.P.S...hello gorgeous, I would like to see us meet up some time.

My thanks to the lovely Darcy Wilkinson whose blog Art and Sole is ALWAYS full of tasty-ness!!!  Would be fab to meet up....who knows what the future will bring...... ;o)

On another note: I would like to thank Tracy Smith of Cinnamon Jewellery for interviewing me for her latest "Sunday Showcase on Folksy" blog post... ;o)
